Basement Flood in Delaware County, PA

Timely Water Damage Restoration

Property Recovery 911 was contacted by a homeowner for a basement flood cleanup Lansdowne borough of Delaware County, PA. Initially the job was awarded to a competitor who failed to arrive at the agreed upon time and date, which is an inexcusable discourtesy that our customers will not suffer when putting their trust and wellbeing in our hands. Water damage restoration is a time sensitive endeavor, prompt service is essential to reducing the progressive effects of water exposure, which can wick up walls, travel under base boards, penetrate floor coverings, infiltrate sub-floors and damage adjacent rooms. If left unchecked over 48 hours, microbial growth can ensue threatening the interior environment and the health of those within.

Basement Flood Cleanup

Upon arrival, we were confronted with a basement flood resulting from a freeze damaged water supply line. There was more than 6” of standing water flooding the entire basement that consisted of a finished family room, an office and a utility/laundry room. The initial step in this flood cleanup was extensive water extraction. This task was accomplished using our Dri-Eaz HVE 3000 portable flood pumper and inline truck-mount booster.

Once extracted, we removed the contents that were beyond water damage restoration and staged them outside for pickup, hauling and dumping. We then used a technique known as blocking and tabbing to elevate the salvageable belongings atop non-absorbent blocks for in-place drying. Our flood cleanup continued with the deconstruction of water damaged veneers, to expose building materials beneath for thorough structural drying. Water damaged baseboard and door casings were removed, soaked carpet and padding were cut out, saturated paneling was ‘flood cut’ and the insulation within discarded. The materials were added to the debris along the driveway to be hauled away and dumped.

Disinfection & Structural Drying

Sanitization was the next step in this water damage restoration job, which is essential in any flood cleanup to ensure a safe and healthy living environment. We use Benefect Botanical Disinfectant, a product that achieves remarkable efficacy without the use of synthetic chemicals. Containing botanically pure plant extracts that are safe for children, pets, and the chemically sensitive, benefect surpasses the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s efficacy requirements for broad spectrum hospital disinfectants and is known to kill over 99.99% of germs including MRSA, Fungi, HIV, TB, Salmonella, Staph, E.Coli, Flu including H1N1 and the common cold.

Water damage restoration continued with the deployment of structural drying, including 3 Drieaz Revolution Dehumidifiers, 10 centrifugal fans, 2 axial fans and an air scrubber placed at the closed basement entrance to protect the inhabitants from inhaling any particulate matter that may have become airborne. Over the period of 3 days, structural drying equipment remained in place and we made daily visits to monitor the effectiveness of our drying efforts. Internal moisture content readings were taken from the building materials daily throughout the 3 day drying period. We were able achieve moisture content within 3 points of our dry standard and deem this flood cleanup project a success as per IICRC guidelines set forth in the S500, which is the universally accepted Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Water Damage Restoration.
